![]() ![]() If in this case, Postgres can run in the same host as the main app, I think it's a good thing to do. The latency between the app and the database is what matters. Latency between you and the app is usually constant. This is when the network latency starts being noticeable. SQLite really shines when compared to running a database in a separate server from the app. A few observations (considering the blog post skips numerous details): also because of projects like PostGIS and support for more complex setups, like custom data types, more advanced scripting language for in-database processing and whatnot? And yet, it's still a decent option, has good tooling (MySQL Workbench is great), is widely supported and backs a significant amount of production systems out there.ĭo people just view it as old/legacy, or is there the belief that for many use cases PostgreSQL might simply be the better option, e.g. ![]() Though it's also curious, because you never hear a lot about MySQL or MariaDB (comparatively, in my subjective opinion) on HN or many other places for that matter. Of course, SQLite might be the best choice for embedded or local usage, they even have this lovely page about using it as an application file format: Īnd PostgreSQL might scale better for multiple writers and situations where you need it on a separate VM/server/container that might be shared between different apps through a network connection of some sort. You know, apart from some of the details in regards to what data types to better use etc., I think that both PostgreSQL and SQLite are excellent choices for most use cases! ORMs are a nice crutch to get started, but that's it. It's the same old story: dev meets ORM, ORM makes things easy (at first), dev needs more power, dev bumps up against ORM's limitations, dev works around those limitations, dev now has a frankenapp, dev wants to switch RDBMSes but can't, or dev wants to ditch the ORM but it's a lot of work. This is real life with a multi-RDBMS ORM: the promise of RDBMS neutrality always fails in some way as the differences between the RDBMSes bleed through the ORM's abstractions, and that bleeding occurs the moment you need more expressive power than the ORM provides out of the box for dead-simple apps. Nowadays, of course, SQLite3 has JSON support, and PG has JSON and JSONB, and so it should be possible to fix that, but it would be quite the migration, so no one bothers. ![]() The main problem is that the app in question needed something like SQLite3's `ANY` type in PG but all there was back then was `hstore` (and even now, all there is is `hstore`, `json`, and `jsonb`), so `hstore`-using code metastasized and no one kept the SQLite3 bits working. > because of the syntax error or other possible causes? There are some pages that only allow the "big fish" (IE, Netscape) to browse them and, for this purpose, you can have WebStripper disguise itself, using a custom name. The program is compatible with proxies too, and if you need firewall authentication to be able to connect to the Internet, you can configure these settings in the options panel. You have the option of downloading text alone and leaving out components such as graphics, large files, and so on, so that only the relevant information is kept (nowadays, websites use graphic and multimedia components as the foundation of their structure, so leaving them out might significantly reduce the download time, but it will also take some quality points with it). The featured toolbar contains all the buttons that you'll find in an ordinary browser, but, apart from the refresh button, you'll find the "Update" action too. ![]() If you've used another offline browser in the past, and after reading this review, and testing the program yourself, you will want to switch to WebStripper, you can import all your downloaded websites. Nevertheless, the links will remain in their original state, but the program will not be able to run them offline. This feature is only available for the "download whole site" feature, and it will not apply if you choose to download a single page. The program links the pages together, making the whole website navigable offline this does not only mean that you're able to browse an entire site without being connected to the Internet, but you do it at a great speed, eliminating the time it takes for a page to load. This being a trial version, the program adds a watermark to your website (watermark is a light word, since it bombards the page allover with "WebStripper" and fragments of this phrase). In the browser section you can see the downloaded version of your website. The welcome tab shows generic information, regarding the address of the page that you've downloaded, and registering details. The work area has five different views: welcome, browser, files, what's new, and the errors section. Also, once downloaded, the program can update the selected webpage at given time intervals (here too, you have the chance to schedule the action by specifying what days of the week you want it to be performed, at what time intervals, and the hour ranges). You can have the program start the job right now, or you can schedule the operation for a later day (having to specify the day of the week, and the hour). You can configure filters for your download, by creating download rules, so that no unnecessary pages are downloaded and the precious bandwidth is not overloaded. You can also choose the depth that you want the program to go, and specify it as a number of pages the same applies for outside links (referred to as servers in the program). When downloading a new site, you have the option of selecting to download just the page found at the address that you indicate, or the whole website. You can drag and drop categories and websites, rearranging them as you wish. You can choose to save your site to one of the default categories (business, computers, finances, humor, kids, or software) or create a new one that's more specialized. On the left part you get a website organizer, structured in folder-like categories. The interface is easy to get used to, and provides "to the point" functionality. The program takes little time to load, thus it consumes little system resources and your computer won't lock up when you use it. However, note that directly comparing lumens and candela values of lighting devices is not wise. The following equation roughly describes the relation between candelas and lumens: We use both lumens and candelas to measure the luminous efficacy of lighting devices in industrial settings. It may not be suitable for your business needs. Do not allow a retailer to cheat you into buying an expensive lighting device that has a higher lumens value. In such cases, you will have to buy lighting devices after comparing their candela values. On the other hand, some of your employees may work with intricate devices and need overhead lights to shine directly on the objects they are working with. ![]() Therefore, larger spaces will require a higher lumens value. The greater the lumens value, the more light the device will emit. In such cases, you will need to concentrate on the lumens value of a lighting device. Proper light is necessary in corridors and storerooms, so that your employees can move around easily. For instance, you need to install lights in your office premises to illuminate the objects in an area. Knowing about the difference between lumens and candela will help you choose the appropriate lighting device for your business premises. Why Do You Need to Know About the Difference Between Lumens and Candela? This is because it emits a greater amount of light spread over a larger area than the pencil torch. On the other hand, an incandescent light or a fluorescent light bulb has a low candela value but a high lumens value. While buying a torch, don't concern yourself with its lumens value because you will only use this device to illuminate a very small area. It projects in a single direction as a high-intensity beam. The torch has a high candela value because its light concentrates into a single point. The difference between lumens and candela can be better understood in the context of a comparison between a pencil torch and an incandescent bulb or a fluorescent bulb. In this context it is worth mentioning that the term Maximum Beam Candlepower (MBCP) is often used to refer to the maximum intensity of the focused beam of light emitted usually from the center of the lighting device, which is usually the source, and projected in a single direction. One candela is approximately equal to the light that a candle with specific dimensions, produces. The word candlepower was substituted with the term candela in 1948. Candlepower measurement is from times when the candle was the primary source of illumination. But if the light emitted from this apparatus narrows and must shine within a 20-degree beam, then its candela value will increase to 18,000.Ĭandela is another word for candlepower. For instance, a standard fluorescent light device that emits a wide-spread beam can have a rating of 1,700 lumens and 135 candelas. But the candela value of a lighting device is concerned primarily with a focused beam of light. The lumens unit does not consider the spread or divergence of the light being emitted by the device. On the other hand, candela refers to the amount of light emitted by a lighting device in a particular direction. The higher the lumens value of a lighting device, the greater the area it illuminates. Lumens refers to the total amount of light a lighting apparatus emits. However, they may not be relevant for your needs. More importantly, this knowledge will ensure that your lighting supplier does not cheat you. Some may try to convince you about the merits of a lighting device by quoting impressive lumens or candela numbers. Knowing about the difference between lumens and candelas will help you choose lighting devices that are ideal for your workplace. Lumens and candela are both lighting measurement units, but they measure different aspects of a lighting device. What Do You Need to Know About Lumens and Candela?
